What is NYIPT in 2020?
In the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic, the world we
live in has drastically changed, and therefore, the services of NYIPT
are needed more than ever. As an Institute dedicated to providing
training to therapists from differing disciplines, NYIPT is focused on
creative and new, as well as traditional, ways of working with infants,
children, adolescents and their parents from diverse backgrounds. By offering trainings to help child therapists reach
a higher level of expertise, we are increasing the quality of mental
health services for needy children and families from all backgrounds who
live in the New York City area. The NYIPT community consists of over a hundred
licensed and trained child therapists and supervisors who are dedicated
to helping children overcome adverse experiences of trauma, manifested
in feelings of anxiety, helplessness and depression. We are committed to
helping parents provide an environment for their children where they can
face the challenges of change and uncertainty in the world today,
leading to optimal growth.
Our theoretical model is
rooted in psychoanalytic theory, with a focus on fostering attachment
for children and their parents, as well as the capacity for parents to
relate to their children through understanding and mentalization. We
integrate a basic psychodynamic approach with clinical technique based
on research promoting interpersonal relationships.
NYIPT is certified by the New York State Department of Education, to provide Continuing Education credits to social workers, and we plan to apply to the Department of Education to offer CEUs to Psychologists and Mental Health Workers in the near future. In addition, NYIPT has been administering several grant-supported programs at community-based agencies. We provide supervision and training to therapists who work dyadically with children and parents whose children are at-risk or have already been placed in foster care.
